Autism & ADHD
Autism primarily affects social communication and sensory processing, while ADHD impacts executive function, focus, and impulse control.
About ADHD
What is ADHD?
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulse control, and executive functioning. Individuals with ADHD may experience difficulty sustaining focus, organizing tasks, managing time, or regulating activity levels in ways that are inconsistent with what’s expected for their age. While ADHD is commonly identified in childhood, it frequently continues into adulthood and can influence school, work, and relationships. Symptoms vary widely between individuals, with some presenting primarily inattentive traits, others predominantly hyperactive-impulsive behaviors, and many a combination of both.
Traditional approaches often include behavioral strategies for organizing skills and productivity, psychosocial education and, when appropriate, pharmaceutical support. Naturopathic care compliments traditional treatment by supporting the whole person and addressing contributing factors that may affect cognitive performance and regulation. Treatment ideas may include nutritional assessment and individualized dietary guidance, herbal medicines for focus and stress resilience, and targeted supplementation to support neurotransmitter balance. Lifestyle factors such as sleep quality, movement habits, and sensory regulation are also considered key components of a comprehensive ADHD care plan.
By working collaboratively with patients, naturopathic strategies can enhance overall wellbeing and potentially reduce the burden of symptoms when used alongside other treatments. The naturopathic focus is on personalized, evidence-informed care that meets each patient’s unique needs.
About Autism
What is Autism?
Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social and communication impairments, sensory processing problems, difficulty adjusting to change, limited interests and repetitive actions or behaviours. Autism presents uniquely in each individual, with a wide range of strengths and challenges that vary across the spectrum. Some people may excel in detailed thinking, pattern recognition, or creative problem-solving, while others may require additional support with communication or daily living skills. Sensory hypersensitivities and differences in social interaction are common, but not universal, aspects of the experience.
Conventional autism care often focuses on behavioral and occupational therapies, educational support, speech therapy, and family-centered interventions. The naturopathic perspective in helping people with Autism views care beginning with a comprehensive evaluation of biological and physiological systems that can influence function, including digestion, inflammation, sleep, and metabolic health. Naturopathic strategies may include individualized nutrition plans, targeted supplementation, and gentle herbal support aimed at increasing metabolism, optimizing wellbeing and reducing discomfort. Attention to gut-brain interactions, sleep optimization, and stress regulation are also common components of holistic autism support.
By working together with families and other healthcare providers, we aim to create integrative care plans that reflect the whole person, not just a diagnosis. The goal is not to “cure” autism or ADHD, something that is neither possible nor appropriate, but to support health, comfort, and quality of life in ways that honour each person’s individuality.
